Dr O.P. Bhalla Central Library: A True Reservoir of Learning
The Dr O.P. Bhalla Central Library is a great hit among students and the reason is not hard to guess. Like most New Age libraries, it provides unlimited access to information in many formats and from many sources. Its inception has been more traditional though as it began on an auspicious note. Inaugurated by his Holiness Swami Satyamitranand Giriji Maharaj on April 4, 2014–MREI’s first Founders Day– the Library is a standing testimony to MREI’s quest for Quality Education. It is also a fitting tribute to Founder Visionary Dr O.P. Bhalla whose lifelong mission and goal was to create better human beings. The Library with its state-of-the-art infrastructure, plush and spacious settings, aesthetically done up interiors and huge collection of more than one lakh documents in print and electronic format, is a bibliophile’s dream come true. To students at MREI, it offers a perfect platform for research, innovation and development and a tranquil ambience to explore the world of books.
The Library is blessed for more reasons than one. When his Holiness inaugurated the Library in the gracious presence of Chief patron Mrs Satya Bhalla, Chancellor Dr Prashant Bhalla, Vice President Dr Amit Bhalla and Vice Chancellor Dr N.C. Wadhwa, he wrote an emotional piece in the Visitor’ s book: “The Library is established as a mark of respect to Goddess Saraswati. It is a centre where knowledge in the fields of Science, Art, literature, the Vedas and the Performing Arts will be derived with great zest and enthusiasm.” The fact that it was set up in memory of Founder Visionary who always ensured world class infrastructure for the students, speaks volumes about its facilities and far reaching impact.
To begin with, the Central Library is in sync with the latest in technology, offering a balanced combination of print and digital collections. The online databases like IEEE, ASME, ASCE, Infotrac Gale, J-Gate Ebcosohost, Knimbus and membership of digital consortia DELNET and other professional bodies have opened up a wealth of opportunities for scholars and students alike.
The Library is Wi-Fi and RFID enabled (a technology facilitating self service of books in areas like the issue of books, return, renewal, reissue, reservation and security management), offering the latest state-of-the art technological applications including e-books, audio-books, ejournals, ipads to maximize the use and ease of library resources. A student strolling into the Library can delve into a whole range of text books, reference books and general reading material for enriching his mind and intellect. For instance, books on industrial management jostle for space with books on fluid dynamics, human anatomy and Shobha De’s ‘Selective Memory’.
Mr Vikram Sharma, Chief Librarian, feels, “The Central Library is the heart of the campus.” Brimming with new thoughts and ideas, he informs that kindles have recently been added to the existing collection of e-books and plans are on to introduce android application for students to check their account status online. “We are also looking at the prospect of setting up book clubs and hosting documentary screenings to supplement classroom lectures,” he says, taking pride in the Library’s warm and tastefully decorated interiors of rich leather upholstery, colourful lampshades and green planters.
It is an oasis of calm for students like Neha Jain, 4th Semester FET, CSC student of MRIU. She is a hostelite who enjoys “the free and easy access to books in an atmosphere that is conducive to learning”. Fellow student Lokesh Kumar, also a hostelite and a Mechanical Engineering 4th Semester student of MRIU, uses the Library for “self study, away from the din of hostel and friends”. With dedicated sections like Discussion Rooms, Audio Visual Rooms, Digital Library and a separate enclosure for Research and Reference, the Central Library is slowly but surely inculcating a reading habit among the young and restless. Its cafeteria ‘Hot Embers’ serving refreshments, amphitheatre (for cultural dos, debates and discussions), not to mention its large collection of books on religion, spirituality and biographies, has only added to its ever increasing charm. “The Library has successfully created a buzz in the campus as a vibrant and happening place,” says Mr Vikram, pleased as punch.
The library remains open between 8:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. from Monday to Saturday and 9:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. on Sundays. It is that quiet sanctum in the campus which provides the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing very large amounts of information with a great variety of digital tools. While the Library itself is something of an aesthete’s delight, its services go well beyond the physical walls of the building, as it continues to shape and nurture some of the Institution’s most promising minds.
