New courses launched- July, 2012, Department of Biotechnology
M. Sc. in Water Treatment & Technology (2 Years)
The knowledge and understanding of Water Technology has advanced extensively in the current scenario. For young scientists and engineers entering the Water Technology profession, the new developments and techniques can be overwhelming, particularly in developing countries where access is not readily available to advanced level courses in Water Technology. M. Sc. in Water Treatment & Technology course is thus aimed at developing young professionals with deeper insight, strengthened hand-on skills, advanced knowledge and greater confidence in the field of wastewater treatment and technology.
Indian scenario:
In India there is plentiful of water resource; however, problem of water contamination and potable water scarcity exists throughout the nation. Development of indigenous systems/ devices to provide safe / and adequate drinking water to households is the need of the day. Also treatment of waste water from industrial units is mandatory and all such installations have their own treatment plants. But the issue of the day is that there is deficit of skilled manpower for these waste water treatment plants and drinking water processing units.
As a result there is huge opportunity for employability. The Indian market demand is high in terms of skilled and semi skilled manpower. There are number of small and large industries in this field, along with MNCs, operating in India.
M. Sc. in Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine (2 Years)
Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine is a one of the most rapidly emerging area of biotechnology with enormous potential for employment and research. Regenerative medicine will help to produce extended and healthy longevity. Stem cells are required for regenerative therapies and hold great potential for disease management. The M.Sc. course in Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine will inculcate the requisite theoretical knowledge and fundamental practical skills in this area, resulting in excellent employment opportunities for graduates in this ever-growing and upcoming area.
Indian scenario:
In India regenerative medicine is though at its infancy; however in the coming years India will prove to be at the forefront in this area in Asia. Indian government has taken innovative and effective measures and huge grants have been provided to fund stem cell research. Specialized and devoted task forces and centers of excellence for stem cell research have been set up by the Indian Council of Medical Research and the Department of Biotechnology. The focus area is increasingly on the use of cord blood stem cells in regenerative medicine.
Some of the premier institutes in the area of Stem Cells in the country are:
- Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), Chennai
- Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Bangalore (INSTEM)
- Center for Cellular and Molecular Platform Technologies (C-CAMP)
